“In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.”

links-icon-9889-20x20Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi” by
links-icon-9889-20x20Amy-Jill Levine. Life in first-century Palestine was very different from our world today, and many traditional interpretations of Jesus’ stories ignore this disparity. In this Bible study, Amy-Jill Levine analyzes these “problems with parables” taking readers back in time to understand how their original Jewish audience understood them.

With this revitalized understanding, she interprets these moving stories for the contemporary reader, showing how the parables are not just about Jesus, but are also about us—and when read rightly, still challenge and provoke us two thousand years later. Jan Ligon reminds us that the antiques that our kids don’t want would be of great value for the garage sale. Gale Davis reminds us that those good clothes that we hardly ever wear will be great for our boutique. We are not taking men’s clothes or shoes this year. We want women’s clothes on HANGERS please.

Plan to volunteer at almost any time during this coming week for the Garage Sale Extravaganza August 2- 4th. (You do not have to sign up ahead if you realize you have time to help out.) CUC always has a large group of volunteers working that whole week.

Consider donating homemade baked goods and/or purchasing baked goods at the Job Networking fundraising Bake Sale. Apples to CUC for MUST lunches!

Box Tops should be clipped when you see them on boxes, cans, bags you have brought home from stores. You can find a current list of products that feature Box Tops for Education by searching for Box Tops for Education on your computers.

Quite a variety of brands helps schools this way. Many schools collect them. All these items contributed from our class are mailed to Red Bird Missionary Conference in Kentucky to help the Christian school there.

Over the years these Box Tops sent from churches and individuals across the USA have made a positive difference in the school’s ability to provide “extras” such as hall lockers, prizes for perfect attendance, fuel for vans, field trips. These benefits are not part of the school’s budget.

Red Bird Missionary Conference has an excellent computer site. Please refer to it for information about this Methodist center in rural Appalachia.

Flip tops from cans – keep collecting them and bring to Sunday School. These go to support Ronald McDonald Houses

It’s time to be thinking about class officers for 2018-19 with responsibilities beginning in August. Sara Beecham, current Vice President, will move into the president position but many other jobs will likely be available.

If you’re interested in serving on any committee or would like to change your current assignment, please let me know asap. My goal is to have everything tied down by mid-July.

Many thanks, Tom Knight

Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law. You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. For there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Newsletter Items

newspaper-small

It is always good to get contributions for this newsletter from CUC class members and committee chairs. It wouldn’t be at all interesting or useful to our CUC members and church staff without your input.

Next week from June 8 through June 16 anything that you wish to have sent out to CUC please send to Doug Tatom.

If you have a prayer request or an announcement to be included in the Friday email for Sunday June 17 to the CUC members, please send it to Doug by Thursday evening.

CUC CLASS OFFICERS FOR 2018-19

It’s time to beginning thinking about class officers for 2018-19 with responsibilities beginning in August. Sara Beecham, current Vice President, will move into the President position but many other jobs will likely be available.

Current committees have all done a great job and keeping some experienced persons on their current assignments is advisable. However, it is equally important to get new people involved.

A nominating committee will begin working on this in the next few weeks. Information on current class committees is available on the class web site (CUC Class Officers) and will also be available as a handout on Sunday. If you’re interested in serving on any committee or would like to change your current assignment, please let me know asap. My goal is to have everything tied down by mid-July.

Many thanks, Tom Knight

Fellow CUCers, summer is here and that means Must Summer Lunches.

We will be passing the hat this Sunday and that will determine the number of lunches we can provide.

We know we can do it again this year! Our first date is June 12, Tuesday, 9:00 am, in the Fellowship Hall. Thank you for all you do throughout the year.

Small Things Support Our Various Mission Outreaches!

Thank you, CUC members, for participating in a project that helps Red Bird Mission School in rural Kentucky.

The Labels for Education that we have sent to this school are among the 1,500,000 required for the school to be awarded a new school van by the Campbell Company. This van will provide transportation for students depending on this school for their education and also for trips students make during the year.

Labels for Education are not printed on as many grocery items any more, but they will be accepted at Red Bird School until the end of 2017. Any you have will be sent for other needs there. Betty Hunt is collecting the Labels for Education and Box Tops for Education.

Please continue to save the pull tops from soda cans to support the Ronald McDonald House which Nancy and Johnie Wright are collecting.
