“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:14-16.

Our CUC Super Bowl Party is this Sunday Feb 4, at 5:30, at The Mellow Mushroom, at 935 Woodstock Road. It is going to be a good party! For questions contact Jeff Coelho or MariAnna Brown.

Murphy Harpst Birthday Party

Thank you, CUC Class, for generously supporting efforts to make our fourth annual birthday party at Murphy-Harpst Children’s Center on February 10th a success. Bingo games we visitors play with the residents are an important part of the afternoon, and small prizes won mean a lot to young winners.

The following are suggested prizes and tokens for good behavior: decks of cards (regular playing cards or Uno or card games), hair accessories (bands big or small, headbands, brushes), small action figures or Legos, gel pens, Cokes/Dr. Pepper/Orange Fanta soda, Starburst/Sour Skittles/Pixie Stix, stuffed animals. The committee would appreciate class members shopping for any of these items or checking at home if you have them and can make those donations. You may have some other ideas for creative and appropriate prizes! A box in the classroom is available to receive them until this Sunday, February 4. THANK YOU!

Homestretch Peachtree Tea

The 11th annual Peachtree Tea to benefit Homestretch will be held February 27, 11:00 – 1:30 at the Country Club of the South with a champagne reception, luncheon and auction.

CUC always has a nice turnout to this event and Lynn Adcock would like to get at least a full table together from our class. Contact Lynn or sign up on the sheet being passed on Sunday if you are interested in supporting Homestretch and attending. Tickets are $80.

CUC Newsletter – January 12, 2018

After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it.

RUMC as Movie Set

Bill Scott announced that RUMC was used recently as a star-studded movie set thanks to the efforts of some CUC members.

Catherine Simons, knowing the big part that movie making is playing in our local economy, thought it would be neat if RUMC could offer the assets it has on its campus to filmmakers for their sets. The filmmakers would get the sets they needed and RUMC would get some publicity and income.

Stan Thomason had proven ability as a photographer, owned professional equipment and was happy to help. Stan spent a couple of days shooting all around the campus then processing and culling the photos for consideration. The sanctuary didn’t make the cut, but the chapel proved to be exactly what was needed for a brief but dramatic scene in a movie.

Netflix’s new feature movie, Come Sunday, is based on a This American Life episode from 2005. Come Sunday chronicles the story of Carlton Pearson a renowned evangelical minister in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who stirs up controversy with his revelation that there is no hell. He loses everything and must rebuild his church and his family and find his own personal faith. Any income from this goes to the church general fund.

Jim McCormick’s
new book, The Right Order of Things, has arrived and will be available at CUC on Sunday! See Tom Knight for a copy. Many of you will recall that Jim shared parts of this book with us when he taught CUC a few months ago. It’s a great summary of Jim’s thoughts on Christian beliefs in our modern world presented in a simple way that all of us can understand.

The cost is $15 per book. Thanks to Jim, a $7 donation will be made to the RUMC Foundation for every book sold at RUMC. Make checks payable to the RUMC Foundation. If you didn’t sign up to receive a copy earlier there’s no problem. We have plenty available and Jim has personally signed every copy!

CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

Two seemingly unrelated statements made in CUC last Sunday came together to make a significant impact on a number of class members.

  • First, Linda Boswell made a statement about the number of children being adversely affected by the increase in drug use and the limited assistance available to them.
Secondly, Kristin’s (Heiden) message encouraged us to “live in the present” and make the most of it.
  • After the class, several folks put those two statements together along with our long time association with Murphy-Harpst Children’s Home, The Methodist Children’s Home, and Foster Care Support Foundation to pose the question: Why don’t we “ live in the present” and do something that contributes to solving a significant problem through organizations we already support?

Why not?

After discussion with others in CUC leadership, the recommendation is to take a special offering this Sunday to be divided equally between the three organizations mentioned above. To participate please make checks payable to “CUC Class” and indicate on the memo line “Children’s Special”.

This Sunday is the last time we will meet until 2017. Don’t let procrastination be an option to” living in the present”!

Operation Christmas Child

Thanks for your contributions to Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. Well over 1,000,000 boxes are on the way from the Atlanta area to children around the world !

Another Christmas for Children Opportunity

The Summer Lunch leadership team volunteered at the Marietta MUST Christmas Toy Shop this past week and the need for toys, blankets and stuffed animals is BIG!

The Marietta MUST Ministry Toy Shop is set up like a department store for Moms, who get to “shop” for their kids for Christmas. Each child gets one “big” toy (a doll, lego set, a skateboard etc), two small toys, a throw blanket and a stuffed animal. If the stuffed animal table is empty when it’s their turn, no animal for their kiddo. A Mom is scheduled to shop every 10 minutes, every day the shop is open, so they go through a lot of stuff very quickly. This table of animals will be gone in an hour.

Want to help? The MUST collection van will be at Roswell United Methodist Church THIS Sunday until 12:30 PM. If you would like to buy some stuffed animals to donate (or toys and blankets, too – they need it all!), just bring them with you to church on Sunday and put them in the back of the van. It will be unlocked and parked near the double doors of the Fellowship Hall

RUMC Name Tags

If you ordered a church name tag and have not received it, it is available for pick up at the Welcome Center in Building A on Sunday mornings. At other times of the week you can be retrieve it from the Church Office in Building B. If your name tag cannot be found, contact Patty Hampton at 770-261-1767. She will determine if it has been ordered or if a new order should be placed.
