How Can I Say Thanks?
Jim McCormick is our CUC speaker this Sunday. His topic will be, “How Can I Say Thanks?”. Our class really looks forward to hearing from Jim. His messages are always so “down to earth” and inspiring. Jim will also be available this Sunday for signing of his new book, Tell It Like It Can Be.

Sandy Griffin has agreed to continue as CUC president after our loss of George Martin
Fred Brown will take Sandy’s place as 2019-2020 CUC vice president.
Tell It Like It Can Be
Jim McCormick’s new book, Tell It Like It Can Be, is being offered through CUC with 100% of the $15 sales price going to a CUC mission project. George and Sandy Martin paid for the publication of the book and all proceeds will be going into a CUC fund as a memorial to George. Tom Knight is handling the sales. Please write your check to CUC and note it is for the book purchase.
Christmas is coming!
We are looking forward to our CUC Christmas party on December 3 at the Metropolitan Club. We are so excited to have approximately 110 people signed up for the party. Please contact MariAnna Brown with any questions. Be sure to pick up your bag for the white elephant gift exchange.
Operation Christmas Child
Finish collecting your goodies to put in the boxes for Operation Christmas Child which are being collected by Lynn Roberts. Or you can contribute on-line. Please let Lynn know if you choose to donate your box on-line. The aim is for CUC to contribute 100 boxes by the final date for collection November 24th! We are almost there! Lynn will be out of town the Sunday after Thanksgiving but boxes can be left in the closet if anyone brings them in that week.
Community Thanksgiving Meal
On Thanksgiving Day, RUMC opens its doors, shares hospitality, and gives thanks with those living in our ministry partner communities by providing an open meal in the Fellowship Hall.
As with any Thanksgiving Day meal, this is a special time, but takes many hands and hearts to make a success! Volunteers are needed to prepare tables, serve lunch, and gather around tables with our guests. Christmas for Murphy Harpst Children
Our CUC Class traditionally helps to make Christmas a happy time at Murphy-Harpst Children’s Home in Cedartown. Pam Kramer, our contact person there, has sent the following message to us. “We are excited to provide the best holiday for our residential, specialized foster care, and community services children this season.
Many have not ever experienced a real Christmas and it is truly a joy to see their faces light up on Christmas morning. We appreciate your continued support to make this year one children will never forget.”
The Mission Outreach Committee suggests that we donate cash or checks made out to CUC with Murphy-Harpst on the notation line. All money will be handed to class treasurer Charlie Mason, who will send one check to this Methodist facility. The goal is to provide $25 gift cards for as many young people as our total will buy. Pam knows about our plan for this year. The Christmas basket will be passed around our classroom for the next three Sundays. Thank you for your kindness, CUC. Contact Betty Hunt with any questions.

Library Help Needed
RUMC is looking for a few good hands to help with the RUMC Library for the upcoming year. Duties would include shelving and managing the check-in system. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Rev. Melissa Mobley at mmobley@rumc.com
Model Railroad Open House
Each fall the Piedmont Division of the National Model Railroad Association conducts a series of open houses for members to show off their model railroads. This year there are 74 railroads all over the greater Atlanta area open to the public over a seven week period in October and November. This Saturday, November 23, Charlie Mason’s railroad will be open from 1 PM to 5 PM. Members of the CUC Class are invited to see model trains run over a layout modeling the South Jersey area in the 1950’s.

- Bob Leckie, recently diagnosed with diabetes, has been at Northside Hospital this week, and has had a vascular procedure to open blood vessels to improve healing of injury to toe after a fall last week. Asking for prayers for healing.
- Catherine Simons as she deals with her father’s failing health
- Dave Woodworth, former CUC member, on the loss of his son David
- Mauricio Cuervo, next door neighbor of Sandy Martin, who is battling lymphoma and may need a bone marrow transplant.

- Patricia Lanham would like to thank the class for their prayers, emails, calls and cards following her ablation. “I really do appreciate it! I am home taking it easy per doctor’s orders and beginning to feel much better.”

- Barbara Davis – was not doing well in rehab and has been returned to the Gwinnett Northside Hospital in Duluth. Room 405.
- Johnny Johnson and Donna as he continues chemo for his pancreatic cancer.
- Patsy Lanham is scheduled for a heart ablation at Emory/St. Joseph’s next Monday morning at 7:30 and would appreciate prayers for a successful procedure. This is to hopefully get rid of the impulses causing atrial fibrillation. She will be there overnight.

A Salute to CUC Veterans
November 10 is the birthday of the Marine Corps and November 11 is Veterans Day, so in our CUC class it is planned to have a tribute to retired military class members who will share their stories along with a Power Point presentation. Jim McCormick will also be at our CUC class this Sunday to tell us about his new book.

Jim McCormick , one of our favorite CUC speakers, has a new book out, Tell It Like It Can Be , and it is available on Amazon. But instead of ordering it from Amazon, it will be offered through CUC with 100% of the sales price going to a CUC mission project.
Each chapter of this book contains inspiration, encouragement, and challenge for those who take God seriously and who seek to be followers of Jesus. Not narrowly denominational or fundamental, it speaks to everyone who wants to experience the gracious gifts of God that are available to all sincere seekers and to pass that on to all the children of God.
We understand our own George Martin was instrumental in having Jim write this book as he told Jim he wanted a book that he could give to his grandchildren about the Christian faith.

- Sandy Martin – Prayers and sympathy on the loss of George last Sunday morning. Our CUC class president, he was a very special Christian man who will be sorely missed and well-remembered. (George’s memorial service will be on Friday, Nov. 8 at 11:00 in the Chapel with a dinner provided by the CUC Class following in Fellowship Hall.)
- Dick Anthony – Has been moved to Glancy Rehabilitation Center in Duluth as of last Saturday. Visitation is 4 to 9 He is scheduled to come home on Thursday. He will be going to Laverne’s house.
- Julian Belote – for continued good recovery following fractured hip

Thanksgiving
From Larry and Betty Hunt: Thanks to an attentive heart physician and a skilled vascular surgeon, Larry Hunt was operated on October 30 for a carotid artery found 80% occluded. He was at Northside Hospital Forsyth for only that day and the next. We thank God for all the good attention from the staff there and for knowing that fellow members of CUC would wish him well. Recovery time is about two weeks.

Annual Pledge Sunday
With this coming Sunday being the Sunday when we consider what our annual pledge to the church will be, Vince Grosse offers the following information for your consideration:
When you take a distribution from a “Traditional” IRA, you must pay taxes on it as you haven’t paid taxes on the money you put into the IRA originally. However, if you are 701/2 years of age and you make a charitable deduction directly from your “Traditional” IRA to a qualified charity, it is not considered a taxable distribution.
You can use this charitable donation to meet all or part of your IRA’s RMD (required minimum distribution.) If you itemize your deductions, you cannot also claim this charitable donation as a deduction on Schedule A. If you don’t itemize but take the standard deduction, a charitable donation from your RMD will give you a tax break. Talk to your tax preparer or IRA manager for more information.
This is a great way to meet your annual pledge or donate to the Foundation, or both!

- Dick Anthony – Still hospitalized at Northside Hospital Cumming. Awaiting move shortly to Glancy Rehabilitation Center in Duluth. Visitation is 4 to 9 and he will be there two weeks.
- Julian Belote – for continued good recovery following discharge from rehab on Thursday after 20 days. He has improved so much. They are very appreciative of the loving support from our incredible CUC Class.
- Barbara Davis – recovering at Glancy Rehab Center in Duluth. Visitors are allowed.
- Johnny Johnson and Donna as he has begun chemo for his pancreatic cancer, and returned back to Atlanta for subsequent treatments. He’ll also continue exploring additional therapies. It was good to see them in class with their son on Sunday, having returned to their old home in Roswell.
- George Martin and Sandy as George remains at home, placed on Hospice care last weekend. No visitors at this time but Sandy expresses thanks to everyone at CUC who have showered them with affection and prayers. Their family has rallied around them.
- Tom Cantrell – as he begins treatment for stage 1 bladder cancer

Operation Christmas Child
Yes, Christmas is coming! Start collecting your goodies to put in the boxes for Operation Christmas Child which are now available and will be collected by Lynn Roberts any time you want to bring them in. Time Forgotten – Time Remembered
This Sunday at 3:00, the Michael O’Neal Singers will be presenting a program at RUMC which will include the regional premiere of Robert Cohen’s Alzheimer’s Stories, a critically acclaimed work which addresses the subject of memory loss. In addition to the full MOS choir there will be the chamber orchestra, guest soloists, and guest narrator actor, Tom Key. Also included in the concert will be performances of Long, Long, Ago, Shenandoah, Amazing Grace and You’ll Never Walk Alone.

- Dick Anthony – Still hospitalized at Northside Hospital Cumming. He will be moved probably next week to Glancy Rehabilitation Center in Duluth. Visitation is 4 to 9 and he will be there two weeks.
- Julian Belote – for continued good recovery from hip fracture following rehab.
- Tom Cantrell – as he begins treatment for stage 1 bladder cancer
- Barbara Davis – recovering at Glancy Rehab Center in Duluth. Visitors are allowed.
- Johnny Johnson and Donna as they plan to begin the experimental drug therapy Winston Salem for his pancreatic cancer and return to their old home in Roswell.
- George Martin and Sandy as George recovers at home from major surgery, is being treated for anemia, and determines further treatment. He appreciates the cards, emails, and texts, but is not quite ready for visitors.

A Place of Hope
Rev. Nancy Lane is bringing us the CUC lesson this Sunday. Her topic is “A Place of Hope”. As Associate Pastor/Pastoral Care at RUMC for about the past 18 years Nancy is well known to us and her work and caring is known and appreciated by all of us. In the few times she has led our CUC class she always brings us a good message.

Sandy Griffin and Kris Taylor have organized our large class into groups by geographical locations so that if someone needs a helping hand, transportation, or whatever, we will be aware of who lives near us who can come assist when and if help of some sort is needed. Who Are These People?
Sally Dowland is our CUC teacher Sunday. She has decided to do a lesson she calls “Who Are These People?” We will take a look at the groups who are so prominent in the New Testament- scribes, Pharisees, Sadducee’s, Samaritans, etc.) and not even given a mention in the Old Testament. This should be a very interesting lesson from a very good teacher.

CUC Fall Retreat
The CUC Retreat this past week at Amicolola Lodge was a really great experience for those 48 CUC members who were able to attend, thanks especially to the fine interesting and inspiring program led by Dr. Joe McKechnie on the theme of “Under Construction”. Thanks also goes to the organizers Tom Knight and George Waite and their spouses, and also to Joe Coelho who provided all the sound and video productions and equipment and the design and printing of the programs. Thanks also to Doug Tatom who provided his technical expertise and has recorded the sessions so that those CUC’ers who did not attend may be able to hear some of the most interesting and inspiring lessons which Dr. Joe presented. Thanks also to every one of the participants who joined actively in the discussion groups and in various other ways to make this retreat very special.

The Paint Lick Pickers – A Bluegrass Celebration
On this Sunday, Oct. 13 at 3 p.m. in the RUMC Chapel there is a Sounds of the Spirit Concert not to be missed! The Paint Lick Pickers is a bluegrass band composed of members of the music ministry at Alpharetta UMC. The band members have a variety of musical experiences and specialties, but the one thing they share is a love of bluegrass music. You will hear familiar hymns, popular tunes, and some true bluegrass classics. And it is free to the public.

This is the title of the book written by Todd and Liz Chancey, written under the pen names of Christopher and Hilda Talley.
They will be at RUMC for a book signing/small talk on 10/9, That is this coming Wednesday, 4-7 in the Trinity Cafe. Many of us knew Todd and Liz when they were here at RUMC. Rev. Todd Chancey is now the Senior Pastor at First United Methodist of ALCOA.
22nd Annual Malone Dodson Golf Tournament
This event at the Woodmont Golf Club, in Canton funds the operations of the RUMC Foundation, Inc. where investment earnings distribute over $150,000 a year to phenomenal causes! So pray for good participation and good weather this Monday, October 7. Thanks for all who are participating in various ways.

- Dick Anthony – Still hospitalized at Northside Hospital Cumming for recovery from recent complications from chemotherapy. He would like to see anyone that wants to come. Friendly faces might help him to get back to himself.
- Tom Cantrell – From Linda: We met with the Urologist on Thursday and it was confirmed that Tom has bladder cancer. There are two stages with bladder cancer – clinical and pathological. We are in the clinical stage and have a diagnosis of Stage 1. We are in the process of seeing specialists to determine what our next steps are and which treatment option we will choose. We are thankful for the outpouring of love, prayers and support for Tom. We believe in the power of prayer and we ask for your continued prayers for our Heavenly Father to guide our steps as we begin this journey to remove the cancer and have perfect healing.
- Barbara Davis – hospitalized twice recently with blood clots in her lungs
- Johnny Johnson and Donna as they determine course of therapy for Johnny’s pancreatic cancer and return to their old home in Roswell

I am now at daughter Elizabeth’s house for a week or so and then hopefully will be able to get back to home which is also new. Every day is a new adventure.

God in the Midst of Thorns
This is the title of the book written by Todd and Liz Chancey, written under the pen names of Christopher and Hilda Talley.
They will be at RUMC for a book signing/small talk on 10/9, 4-7 in the Trinity Cafe. Many of us knew Todd and Liz when they were here at RUMC. Rev. Todd Chancey is now the Senior Pastor at First United Methodist of ALCOA.
Christopher and Hilda Talley were living what they thought was the American dream. They had two beautiful and healthy daughters, a comfortable home, cars, clothes, food on the table, a wonderful faith community, and two terrific jobs they loved. They played at life just as hard as they worked for their lifestyle, traveling in the United States and to foreign lands as often as possible.
But in 1999, that all came crashing down. Hilda went from a happy and healthy person to someone who struggles for every breath she takes, after an inadequately trained pesticide tech came into her office. Two minutes after he left, she was fighting for her life. The chemical permanently damaged her lungs and vocal cords and led to two debilitating diseases: reactive airways dysfunction syndrome and vocal cord dysfunction. Their family life changed instantly.
In God in the Midst of Thorns, Christopher and Hilda share their story, a story intertwined with the testament of God’s love and the power of Christian community, as they began their journey of learning to live a new normal. The Talleys discuss how, in their struggle for understanding, they both found a new and deeper relationship with God.

Gibbs Gardens Senior Trip
Jeff Ross is setting up a trip for the Seniors for Friday Oct. 25th to Gibbs Garden. The plan is to meet at the church at 9am and return by 3pm.
- George Martin was out of surgery as of 7PM Thursday evening. It was a very big surgery and lasted nearly 4 hours. He’s in ICU for 24-48 hrs. Now missing his right colon but soldiering on without it! Prior to surgery his heart rate was so low that the anesthesiologist was very reluctant to approve the surgery but George was very insistent and got thru it ok. He will be in the hospital for 7-10 days and recuperation will likely take a bit longer due to his age. Thank you so very much for your prayers, your concern and your friendship. We are so blessed to have our CUC friends and we are both eager to get back! Sandy
- Dick Anthony – was hospitalized at Northside Hospital Cumming for recovery from recent complications from chemotherapy and then going to rehab
- Betty Smith for good recovery following surgery for a lumbar decompression and fusion. She is in rehab at Manor Care on Johnson Ferry Road.
- Johnny Johnson and Donna, who recently moved, as Johnny has been found to have pancreatic cancer and will be determining his course of therapy.
- Maureen and Gene Osborne and their daughter Michelle who is recovering well. She will go home (maybe as soon as Sunday or Monday). Michelle is very rare patient to have had this type of event happen with absolutely no side effects so far and no further required therapy. She’s apparently healing very quickly other than some headaches expected for several weeks until brain completely heals. Prayers definitely work! Please thank everyone at CUC-the outpouring of cards, emails, texts has been quite overwhelming! God Bless, Gene & Maureen.

The theme of our CUC retreat, led by Dr. Joe McKechnie will be “ Under Construction”.
About 53 of our CUC members plan to relax and commune with God and nature at the Lodge in the Amicalola Falls State Park, October 8-10, in the splendid north GA Mountains. Information about amount and when payment will be due for extra retreat expenses will be coming soon. If you have any questions contact George Waite or Tom Knight.
Coming soon! Sandy Griffin and Kris Taylor are starting work to organize our large class into groups by geographical locations so that if someone needs a helping hand, transportation, or whatever, we will be aware of who lives near us who can come assist when and if help of some sort is needed.

RUMC’s new bi-monthly ministry outreach of a Sunday evening service at Vickery Rose Adult Community, the retirement community at 295 E. Crossville Road, will continue on this Sunday, September 22nd. There is the hope that the service could be a mission outpost for the church, but also a fun and inspirational service option for RUMC members who would like to experience Sunday Evening worship. Bonnie White is the pianist and Jeff Ross is the preacher for the “Vespers” type service held in the theater room at Vickery Rose.

- Dick Anthony – hospitalized at Northside Hospital in Cumming for recovery from recent complications from chemotherapy
- Babs Skillings for relief of pain and continued healing following a fall which fractured several vertebrae and caused extensive skin loss on her leg.
- Betty Smith for good recovery following surgery last Tuesday for a lumbar decompression and fusion. She is recovering in the hospital and will be going to rehab.
- Johnny Johnson and Donna, who recently moved, as Johnny has been found to have a mass in his pancreas and will be meeting with doctors to determine course of action.
- Maureen and Gene Osborne and their daughter who was transferred Thursday from St. Josephs Hospital Emergency to Emory for treatment of a brain aneurysm.

Hurricane Disaster Relief
RUMC is sending about one team a month to Panama City FL area. A gift for that goes into regular RUMC donations.
Information from Linda Boswell:
- UMCOR donations can go to RUMC but should be designated on the memo line as to whether it is donated to general use or specifically for the Bahamas.
- Red Cross donations can be done on-line by credit card to the US Red Cross or to the Bahama Islands Red Cross.

I cleared all of my doctor’s appointments and I’m now ready for the surgery. It will be September 17 at St. Joseph’s Hospital for a lumbar decompression and fusion, It doesn’t sound like fun but I think the end results will be worth it. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers.

CUC Braves Baseball Game
Thanks to Bill Scott for organizing a CUC outing for 14 CUC members this past Thursday night to join him for his birthday at the Braves stadium. They enjoyed watching the Braves beat the Washington Nationals 4 to 2. Thanks to Roger Davis for driving the bus.

CUC Fall Retreat – October 8-10
Last chance to book rooms at the Amicalola Falls Lodge!
About 56 of our CUC members plan to relax and commune with God and nature at the CUC Fall Retreat at the Lodge in the Amicalola Falls State Park in the splendid north GA Mountains.
We have 40 rooms reserved. The reserved rooms will be released September 6th! Reserve your room for the nights of October 8 and 9th by calling 800 573-9656 and indicating that you are attending the RUMC/CUC retreat. The room rate is $154.10 which includes Lodge Service Fee and state and local taxes.
We will have one common meal together on Wednesday evening. The other meals will be on your own. There is the excellent Maple Restaurant on site and nearby Dahlonega has many fine restaurants. Each person attending will be asked to contribute about $75 each to common expenses (common meal, conference room with coffee service, and the speaker’s room and meals). Make your room reservation by September 6th to obtain the CUC rates.
Our leader will be Dr. Joe McKechnie, associate minister here at Roswell. The subject matter is planned to be spiritual but light. Our first session will begin Tuesday evening October 8th and will conclude on Thursday morning October 10th. Wednesday afternoon will be free to enjoy all the attractions the area, the park, and the lodge have to offer.

RUMC Sunday Evening Outreach
RUMC’s new bi-monthly ministry outreach of a Sunday evening service at Vickery Rose Adult Community, the retirement community at 295 E. Crossville Road, will continue on September 8th and 22nd. There is the hope that the service could be a mission outpost for the church, but also a fun and inspirational service option for RUMC members who would like to experience Sunday Evening worship. Bonnie White is the pianist and Jeff Ross is the preacher for the “Vespers” type service held in the theater room at Vickery Rose.

- From MariAnna Brown: Please continue to pray for my great nephew, Jack, and his parents, Dianna and Chris. Jack remains in the NICU as he has been more than 126 days. While he has gotten stronger and made progress he is still a very sick baby. He now weighs 6 lbs 5 oz, up from his birth weight of 1 lb 3 oz. Jack’s lungs were damaged from MRSA, and he can’t breathe without strong oxygen. This weekend the doctor will lower the oxygen level and make other changes. Please pray that he can maintain his life with the changes and the hole in his heart will not require surgery.

- Dick Anthony – as he deals with Shingles and Multiple Myeloma. Also continue to pray for Laverne Lamb as she provides care for Dick and manages the many appointments that are necessary throughout each week.
- Pat (Mrs.) Cooney as she has chemo for multiple myeloma. Her condition has improved and she hopes to stop chemo soon. Keep her and her husband Pat in your prayers.

- Jeff Coelho – back to CUC Class as he is making a good recovery from major cervical spine surgery
- From Gail Earman, former CUC member – Diana (Frei) and I are so appreciative of the CUC Newsletter and look forward to it every week. Just wanted to give you an update on Diana’s health. Dr. is thrilled with her blood results as she continues to deal with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I asked if we could erase the 6 month life expectancy and he said it sure looks that way. He said at that point, that he never will give a specific life expectancy to a patient because he does not presume to know more than God. The basis on the 6 month time was given by the radiologist oncology chief, who said without radiation that would be the expected time. Diana is also receiving infusion every three weeks which is working beautifully at keeping her blood levels normal. Praise God for His work. Prayers by so many have been a blessing and we want to thank the members of CUC for their continued prayers and concerns. She looks great and is functioning very well. Thanks again. Blessings to all.

CUC Fall Retreat – October 8-10
About 55 of our CUC members plan to relax and commune with God and nature at the CUC Fall Retreat at the Amicalola Falls Lodge in the Amicalola Falls State Park in the splendid north GA Mountains. We have 40 rooms reserved. Book now! The reserved rooms will be released September 6th. Reserve your room for the nights of October 8 and 9th by calling 800 573-9656 and indicating that you are attending the RUMC/CUC retreat. The room rate is $154.10 which includes Lodge Service Fee and state and local taxes.
We will have one common meal together on Wednesday evening. The other meals will be on your own. There is the excellent Maple Restaurant on site and nearby Dahlonega has many fine restaurants. Each person attending will be asked to contribute $75 each to common expenses (common meal, conference room with coffee service, and the speaker’s room and meals). Make your room reservation by September 6th to obtain the CUC rates.
Our leader will be Dr. Joe McKechnie, associate minister here at Roswell. The subject matter is planned to be be spiritual but light. Our first session will begin Tuesday evening October 8th and will conclude on Thursday morning October 10th. Wednesday afternoon will be free to enjoy all the attractions the area, the park, and the lodge have to offer.

Plan to Attend Worship!
We have had remarkably good turnouts of around 90+ attendees at our CUC class each Sunday. A number of CUC members leave early to usher, greet, participate in Altar Guild activities, or sing in the choir. Others after class have a brief gathering for refreshments and conversation and then move on to the 11:00 church worship service.
A number of others do not move on to worship. Those folks who don’t get to church are missing out on a wonderful worship experience. The amazing choir, the spectacular organ, the congregational singing, the pastor’s sermon, and joining with other members of the RUMC congregation in the worship of God are all worth being in attendance. If you don’t already go to worship regularly, try to start making it a habit. You’ll be glad you did!
CUC Class is Special!
The North Georgia Conference of the UMC issues a Statistical Report annually. For the full report go to www.ngumc.org – Resources – Documents & Forms – Statistical Tables – then choose a year.
Dave Roberts has shared some interesting statistics from this report.
One of the columns in the 2018 report is entitled “Total Professing Members at Close of Year” and of those 821 churches listed the CUC Class with 170 members is larger than 467 of the smaller churches – with 354 larger than our class. Of the largest reported memberships RUMC was in 4th position with 7561 total members at the close of 2018. Mt. Bethel was the largest, with Ben Hill second and Peachtree Road third.
Murphy Harpst and Red Bird Mission Schools
Each person in our CUC Class knows the value of a good education. We wanted it for ourselves, then for our children and grandchildren. Acquiring knowledge prepares a young person for whatever comes in the future. Two schools CUC knows about are Murphy-Harpst Campus School in Georgia and Red Bird Mission School in Kentucky. Both are part of Methodist institutions that minister to students who depend on help not available from normal home situations.
Thank you, CUC members, for your interest in these students, first for setting up an account at Publix, which supports Murphy-Harpst by automatically crediting the school with a percentage of your purchase. Every week located on a table manned by the CUC Membership Committee is a sheet of information about how to sign up for this benefit, if you have not done so already. The information you provide is secure.
Thank you also for faithfully clipping Box Tops for Education appearing on various market products. Many mailing envelopes full of “clippies” have been sent to Red Bird School located in an extremely poor part of Appalachia. Now General Mills is switching to a digital system requiring the shopper to scan the register receipt. Eligible items are recognized, and the school automatically receives credit. To sign up for the new plan, a customer must submit personal information which would be known to many stores other than Publix. How we can help this Kentucky school in a practical way is yet to be decided. If you have any questions contact Betty Hunt.

We will be selling poinsettias again and wreaths this year along with pecans. No Christmas trees this year- as of now.

Job Networking
Bob Schnackenburg thanked the many CUC members for your continued support of RUMC’s Job Networking program every other Monday night. This past Monday was a big Job Fair which helped many job seekers find good employment opportunities.

RUMC Sunday Evening Outreach
Come and help in RUMC’s new bi-monthly ministry outreach to Vickery Rose Adult Community. Vickery Rose is a retirement community located at 295 E. Crossville Road. We have started a Sunday evening service there. Bonnie White is the pianist and Jeff Ross is the preacher.
The service is a “Vespers” type service. Bonnie and Jeff are hoping that the service could be a mission outpost for the church, but also a fun and inspirational service option for RUMC members who would like to experience Sunday Evening worship. The service is held in the Theater Room at Vickery Rose where the seating is comfortable and the acoustics are outstanding. The next Sunday Service will be on this Sunday, August 18.
Pull Tabs For Ronald McDonald Houses
Nancy and Johnie Wright recently took our CUC pull tabs collection (12 pounds worth!) to an Atlanta Ronald McDonald House. A thank you letter from an ARMH Charities volunteer notes that since 1998 the local pop top recycling program has raised over $148,000 for the two Atlanta houses which house nearly 2000 families of ill and injured children each year in order to keep families together when they need it the most. Keep collecting CUC!

The RUMC Coffeehouse
The newly-opened RUMC Coffee House, a collaboration between Kennesaw’s Independent Grounds Cafe and RUMC, has opened on Mimosa Boulevard. It is the red brick house two doors up from the church in the building which formerly housed SEL.
Consider stopping in for a cup of coffee sometime when you happen to be at the church! Or plan to use one of the rooms for a covenant group or small meeting while enjoying a cup of coffee. It is open Monday – Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The coffeehouse menu consists of a variety of coffee and espresso drinks and grab-and-go pastries. Light lunch fare is planned for the future. The shop offers seating inside and outside on the porch and at tables throughout the grounds.
The coffee shop primarily employs people in the community living with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The idea of it is to showcase what inclusive employment opportunities look like for local businesses that employ adults with special needs. For many of the employees, this is their first job opportunity. It provides them an opportunity to grow in confidence and develop their skills that they can then take anywhere.
