Tell It Like It Can Be
Jim McCormick’s new book, Tell It Like It Can Be, is being offered through CUC with 100% of the $15 sales price going to a CUC mission project. Tom Knight is handling the sales. Please write your check to CUC and note it is for the book purchase. Jim will be speaking in CUC in several weeks and will sign his books for you at that time.
Christmas is coming!
This Sunday, November 17, is the deadline to sign up and pay for our CUC Christmas party on December 3 at the Metropolitan Club. ( Checks should be made out to CUC with Christmas Party in the memo line). We are so excited to have approximately 109 people signed up for the party. If you won’t be in CUC and want to attend please contact MariAnna Brown or a member of the committee to have your name added to the list or if you have any questions. The Metropolitan Club requires our final count and payment 10 business days before our event. If you are out of town please feel free to mail your payment before the deadline The cost will be $40 per person. Be sure to pick up your bag for the white elephant gift exchange.
Operation Christmas Child
Collect your goodies to put in the boxes for Operation Christmas Child which will be collected by Lynn Roberts. Or you can contribute on-line. Please let Lynn know if you choose to donate your box on-line. The aim is for CUC to contribute 100 boxes by the final date for collection November 17th!
Christmas for Murphy Harpst Children
Our CUC Class traditionally helps to make Christmas a happy time at Murphy-Harpst Children’s Home in Cedartown. Pam Kramer, our contact person there, has sent the following message to us. “We are excited to provide the best holiday for our residential, specialized foster care, and community services children this season. Many have not ever experienced a real Christmas and it is truly a joy to see their faces light up on Christmas morning. We appreciate your continued support to make this year one children will never forget.”
The Mission Outreach Committee suggests that we donate cash or checks made out to CUC with Murphy-Harpst on the notation line. All money will be handed to class treasurer Charlie Mason, who will send one check to this Methodist facility. The goal is to provide $25 gift cards for as many young people as our total will buy. Pam knows about our plan for this year.The Christmas basket will be passed around our classroom for the next three Sundays. Thank you for your kindness, CUC. Contact Betty Hunt with any questions.

- Dick Anthony – came home from rehab on Tuesday to Laverne Lamb’s home for further recuperation. Doing OK just needs to grow stronger.
- Tom Cantrell – as he is treated for bladder cancer
- Barbara Davis – was not doing well in rehab and has been returned to the Gwinnett Northside Hospital in Duluth. Room 405.
- Johnny Johnson and Donna as he continues chemo for his pancreatic cancer.
- Patsy Lanham is scheduled for a heart ablation at Emory/St. Joseph’s next Monday morning at 7:30 and would appreciate prayers for a successful procedure. This is to hopefully get rid of the impulses causing atrial fibrillation. She will be there overnight.
- Sandy Martin – Prayers and sympathy on the loss of George.

- Julian Belote – for good recovery following fractured hip
It was good to see Earnie Robertson back to CUC and participating in the Veteran’s Day program in CUC. We wish Bettie Robertson well.

Time Forgotten – Time Remembered
This Sunday at 3:00, the Michael O’Neal Singers will be presenting a program at RUMC which will include the regional premiere of Robert Cohen’s Alzheimer’s Stories, a critically acclaimed work which addresses the subject of memory loss. In addition to the full MOS choir there will be the chamber orchestra, guest soloists, and guest narrator actor, Tom Key. Also included in the concert will be performances of Long, Long, Ago, Shenandoah, Amazing Grace and You’ll Never Walk Alone.

- Dick Anthony – Still hospitalized at Northside Hospital Cumming. He will be moved probably next week to Glancy Rehabilitation Center in Duluth. Visitation is 4 to 9 and he will be there two weeks.
- Julian Belote – for continued good recovery from hip fracture following rehab.
- Tom Cantrell – as he begins treatment for stage 1 bladder cancer
- Barbara Davis – recovering at Glancy Rehab Center in Duluth. Visitors are allowed.
- Johnny Johnson and Donna as they plan to begin the experimental drug therapy Winston Salem for his pancreatic cancer and return to their old home in Roswell.
- George Martin and Sandy as George recovers at home from major surgery, is being treated for anemia, and determines further treatment. He appreciates the cards, emails, and texts, but is not quite ready for visitors.

Who Are These People?
Sally Dowland is our CUC teacher Sunday. She has decided to do a lesson she calls “Who Are These People?” We will take a look at the groups who are so prominent in the New Testament- scribes, Pharisees, Sadducee’s, Samaritans, etc.) and not even given a mention in the Old Testament. This should be a very interesting lesson from a very good teacher.

CUC Fall Retreat
The CUC Retreat this past week at Amicolola Lodge was a really great experience for those 48 CUC members who were able to attend, thanks especially to the fine interesting and inspiring program led by Dr. Joe McKechnie on the theme of “Under Construction”. Thanks also goes to the organizers Tom Knight and George Waite and their spouses, and also to Joe Coelho who provided all the sound and video productions and equipment and the design and printing of the programs. Thanks also to Doug Tatom who provided his technical expertise and has recorded the sessions so that those CUC’ers who did not attend may be able to hear some of the most interesting and inspiring lessons which Dr. Joe presented. Thanks also to every one of the participants who joined actively in the discussion groups and in various other ways to make this retreat very special.
CUC Neighborhood Care Groups
Sandy Griffin and Kris Taylor have organized our large class into groups by geographical locations so that if someone needs a helping hand, transportation, or whatever, we will be aware of who lives near us who can come assist when and if help of some sort is needed. The Paint Lick Pickers – A Bluegrass Celebration
On this Sunday, Oct. 13 at 3 p.m. in the RUMC Chapel there is a Sounds of the Spirit Concert not to be missed! The Paint Lick Pickers is a bluegrass band composed of members of the music ministry at Alpharetta UMC. The band members have a variety of musical experiences and specialties, but the one thing they share is a love of bluegrass music. You will hear familiar hymns, popular tunes, and some true bluegrass classics. And it is free to the public.

The CUC Christmas Party is just a little more than a week away! The Social Committee is thrilled so many of you (110 at last count!)will be joining us on December 3 at The Metropolitan Club!
- Each person will be exchanging a “White Elephant” gift so bring something you want to pass on to someone else to enjoy or not!!!!
- Red gift bags will be available at CUC again this Sunday. If you have been unable to get one they will also be available as you enter the party on December 3.
The deadline for sign up and payment is this Sunday, November 25.

Christmas for Murphy Harpst Children
The CUC Mission Outreach Committee thanks all class members who responded to the opportunity to make Christmas merry for residents at Murphy-Harpst Children’s Center next month.
This is the last of the four Sundays in November a Christmas basket will circulate during class to accept cash and checks. Approximately 130 young people will benefit from our generosity. CUC is following a suggestion from Murphy Harpst that “CUC could provide a smaller denomination of cash or gift card for every child ($10-$20).”
In early December the church will send a check for the total amount collected saying that the donation is from the CUC Class for young people celebrating Christmas at Murphy-Harpst. Checks should be made out to RUMC with CUC Murphy-Harpst Christmas on the notation line. Teenagers receiving gift cards will be able to shop for themselves! Thank you, class, for your generosity. Operation Christmas Child
Thanks from Lynn Roberts and the many children who will receive Christmas boxes from Samaritan’s Purse because of the CUC members who prepared 81 shoeboxes. And thanks to the others who contributed to boxes on line which brought the CUC box total to over our goal of 100.

December 14, 6:00-11 PM is the annual open house at the Nancy & Johnie Wright’s. Please bring finger type appetizer or dessert to share. Carpool if possible and park on sidewalk side of street only.

Advent Study

Seventy seven CUC members have enjoyed a wonderful retreat at Winshape Retreat Center on the Berry College campus this week in spite of less than perfect weather.
Thanks especially to Roger and Gale Davis for making all the arrangements and leading the retreat, Rev. Jeff Ross and Rev. Tom Davis for presenting the program, Bonnie White for leading the music, Doug Tatom for video production, and Martha Knight for arranging for communion.
Consecration Sunday

Booth Western Art Museum
Wednesday, November 14th at 9:00 AM is planned for a CUC trip to the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville to see the Frederic Remington exhibit. Experience the biggest Remington exhibit ever in the South, with treasures from the Frederic Remington Art Museum and beyond. We will tour the museum and have lunch. Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child Shoe Boxes are now available—Please help fill boxes with gifts for children in impoverished countries around the world through Samaritans Purse.
Lynne Roberts will have boxes available in CUC class. Collection week is November 12-18 and you may bring your box in at any time between now and then on Sunday or leave it in the closet in our room. Lynn will collect them on the 12th and 18th of November or you can bring a filled box anytime. ( See Operation Christmas Child email from Dave Roberts, sent Oct. 17, for details)
Annual RUMC Pecan Sale for Missions
The annual Pecan Sale began Oct. 28, and supports the Boy Scouts, Missions, MUST Ministries, and other Discovery Sunday School missions and outreach efforts.
The pecans will be available to purchase in our CUC classroom between 9:00 and 9:30 this Sunday or order online at rumc.com/pecans or pick up a form in the main office, Chapel building.
Price of pecans: single bag – $9.00, 3 bags $25.00, case of 30 -$240.00. Deadline for orders is Sunday, Nov. 18. Orders will be available for pick up Oct. 28-Dec. 9 in the main office Sundays from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and Mondays-Thursdays from 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.
“Beautifully Broken” Girls’ Night Out
Ladies, join Melissa Mobley on Thursday, Nov. 8, 7-9 PM for good food, worship and story-telling as we learn how women can push past adversity as God creates us to be beautiful masterpieces. Donations benefit Drake House. Registration: mmobley@rumc.com

All proceeds realized from the sale of items at the RUMC Mission Booth at City Antiques are designated for missions. All proceeds realized from the October and November sales will be designated to the RUMC hurricane relief effort.

Bible Verse of the Week
This week’s Bible verse is a favorite of Dal Zierk. He writes: When I was in grade 8 and being confirmed, my aunt and sponsor could not attend my confirmation because she lived too far away. But, she sent me a letter and stated how meaningful her Bible verse (Psalms 27:1) was to her and she knew that my Bible verse would be just as meaningful to me. Of the thousands of verses in the Bible, guess which verse the pastor chose randomly for me…Psalms 27:1. To me that was a miracle and the verse has been very impactful throughout my life. In fact, I say it to myself at least once every single day.

Booth Western Art Museum
Wednesday, November 14th at 9:00 AM is planned for a CUC trip to the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville to see the Frederic Remington exhibit. Experience the biggest Remington exhibit ever in the South, with treasures from the Frederic Remington Art Museum and beyond. We will tour the museum and have lunch. Homestretch BBG in the Burbs
BBQ in the Burbs will be held on Sunday, October 28 from 2:00-6:00 pm on The Grounds at Roswell City Hall. This family friendly event includes amazing BBQ, music, kid’s zone, games and raffles. Looking Deeper at the Parables
Scott Dickson returns to CUC this Sunday for the second part of his most interesting lesson “Looking Deeper at the Parables”. He is looking at the parables in a different way, making us think about where and when Jesus taught them and who His listeners were.
Two books about the parables that Scott Dickson recommended were Short Stories by
Jesus by Amy-Jill Levine and The Parables of Jesus by Jim Fleming.

CUC Wednesday Night Dinner for July 25 at Brookwood Grill was attended by 33 CUC members and guests.
Next Wednesday, August 1 at 5:30pm, CUC WNO will be at Peach & the Porkchop, 12040 Etris Rd, Roswell . The clipboard will be passed on Sunday to sign up. If you want to come and don’t sign up, or if you sign up and cannot attend, please call Ann or Larry Douglas by noon Tuesday, so we can provide the restaurant with an accurate count.
MUST Ministries
Thanks again to those who donated financial assistance and those who assisted with the sandwich making for MUST and especially to those who served on the committee. Over the last 2 years CUC has provided lunches using over 5,000 slices of cheese, 15,000 slices of ham, 15,000 slices of bread and over 200 man-hours.
Job Networking Garage Sale Extravaganza Next Week!
You may drop off items for the Garage Sale on Sunday with people waiting at the “Scout Hut” starting at 8:30 am and again between and after services. Volunteers will be able to help you unload your car. However, if possible, wait and donate on Monday, July 30 or Tuesday, May 31.
Jan Ligon reminds us that the antiques that our kids don’t want would be of great value for the garage sale. Gale Davis reminds us that those good clothes that we hardly ever wear will be great for our boutique. We are not taking men’s clothes or shoes this year. We want women’s clothes on HANGERS please.
Plan to volunteer at almost any time during this coming week for the Garage Sale Extravaganza August 2- 4th. (You do not have to sign up ahead if you realize you have time to help out.) CUC always has a large group of volunteers working that whole week.
Consider donating homemade baked goods and/or purchasing baked goods at the Job Networking fundraising Bake Sale. Drop off baked goods next Thursday, 8/2, 12:00-2:00 at the south side of Chapel Building just before the portico. Please identify baked item and include your name. Someone will be at curbside to receive your baked goods. The Bake Sale is on Friday, August 3, 8:00am-6:00pm Bldg B, Room 123-125.Questions? Contact Claudia Phelps.
Adcock Garage Sale
There is an additional garage sale going on this Friday and Saturday from 9:00 to 2:00 at the home of Lynn and Jim Adcock, 1455 Woodcrest Drive, Roswell, to assist them in clearing out their home of 45 years, before everything else is moved to the RUMC garage sale.
They have many beautiful things they have accumulated over the years that just won’t fit in their new apartment at Huntcliff Summit. Come and encourage others to came and you may find some treasures. Tools, glassware, appliances, decorative items, beautiful oriental rugs, gifts, linens, toys, games, books, and some very nice women’s clothes sizes 12-16 and shoes size 8, etc., etc.

Thanksgiving, but continue prayers:
- Pastor Andrew Brunson was released Wednesday after being held in prison for almost two years. He is now under house arrest at his home in Izmir, Turkey, while the charges remain the same.A Turkish state news agency said the court banned him from leaving the country. He will not be able to leave his house except for an interview or a hearing in court. Turkish authorities will keep his passport, and he must wear an electronic ankle bracelet. We hope this is a first step in completely freeing Pastor Andrew. His next court date is in October. (Terry and Wanda Taylor’s son Kent is Andrew’s partner in ministry in Turkey.)
(News reports this Thursday morning are that he will soon return to the United States!)

CUC Christmas Party
We’ve had a great sign-up for our CUC Christmas Party on December 4th. One hundred and six classmates have signed-up, and it is still not too late to put your names on the list.
The cocktail hour begins at 6:00 P.M. with a selection of passed hors d ‘oeuvres, followed by dinner at 7:00 in the ballroom. The menu includes a carving station with prime angus loin and turkey, holiday salad, two vegetables, pasta, and artisanal breads. There will be a cheesecake station and a gourmet coffee and tea station with Italian syrups, etc.
After dinner, there will be a short program followed by dancing and fellowship. We will have a “white elephant” pass-a-long, and you will be provided bags during Sunday School for this event. So, dig out your Uncle Odell’s gift of a tie from last year or Aunt Opal’s hand knitted socks and prepare to have some fun with your friends.
The cost is $39.00 per person, and payment is due by Sunday Nov. 26th. Make checks payable to CUC. Please call Vince or Donna Grosse if you have any questions. We would greatly appreciate everyone bringing a check this coming Sunday, as we will begin making the final arrangements with the club the following week. Additionally, anyone who didn’t pick up a bag for your “white elephant present” last Sunday should do so this Sunday. Dress for the party is “Christmas Casual or Festive Semi-Formal.”
Directions to the Metropolitan Club: Go north on GA-400 and exit onto Windward Parkway. Go east (right) on Windward approximately .4 mile to Edison Drive. Turn right and then right again into the parking lot. The club is located to the left of the foyer on the first floor of this building. The address is: 5895 Windward Parkway, Alpharetta.
CUC Social Committee at Work
The social committee is already at work planning for a CUC class outing to The Lion King at the Fox sometime between the 10th and 28th of January.
A White Christmas for Murphy Harpst
Pam Kramer, the Director of Community Engagement, has sent her thanks to the CUC class of RUMC for the towels and other items delivered on November 17.
“The towels are AWESOME!!! We already accounted for everything, labeled them and provided them to the cottages. Your class is amazing! There were 112 big, fluffy towels, washcloths, candy and much appreciated MP3 players.”
CUC’ers, we have a few Sundays to go before this Christmas White Towel Shower ends. Keep those wash cloths and towels coming. Another delivery will be made to M-H after December 10. Thank you, every one, for your generous donations!
Pam said 19 children were discharged last month and 19 others were received. That’s quite a number to provide clothes and immediate needs for as these new residents come to Murphy Harpst without a thing.
In addition, Murphy Harpst maintains a Point Store where, as a special reward for good behavior, children can choose to get rewards like candy, Gatorade, MP3s, etc. For this Point Store, the staff would appreciate any such donations you are moved to provide.

Christmas Tree/Wreath Sale to Support RUMC Youth Missions
It is that time again! Those of us who have purchased trees and wreaths from our youth in the past highly recommend them for their high quality and freshness. In addition this is a great way to support our RUMC youth. The order deadline will be Sunday, Nov. 26. Tree or wreath pick up is on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary parking lot.

Join us December 11th at 10 am, on a tour of The Christmas at Callanwolde Designer Show House– an Atlanta holiday tradition for 40 years! Visitors of all ages will enjoy touring the 27,000 square-foot historic mansion elaborately decorated by Atlanta’s top interior and floral designers, as well as professional holiday displays, an expansive artists’ market, and themed events for all ages.
