CUC’s speaker this Sunday will be Rev. Scott Parrish, Associate Director, Center for Congregational Excellence of The North Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church with focus on Mission and Disaster Response. Scott’s topic is “God’s Mission Today”.

CUC Wednesday Night Out

This past Wednesday evening 37 CUC members enjoyed the last of our summer CUC dinners out at Peach & the Porkchop (owned by MariAnna and Fred Brown’s daughter and son-in -law). We enjoyed some of MariAnna’s delicious cake!

Thanks to Larry and Ann Douglas and Grady and Pat Phillips and Johnny and Donna Johnson who coordinated our dinners out this summer.

RUMC Wednesday Night Out Restarts

This coming Wednesday evening, 4:45 – 6:30 PM, RUMC’s WNO begins again where we can continue our good WNO fellowship with CUC friends, in our Fellowship Hall, while enjoying Jacob Crane’s great cooking!

CUC Fall Retreat – October 8-10

Relax and commune with God and nature at the CUC Fall Retreat hosted by the Amicalola Falls Lodge in the Amicalola Falls State Park in the splendid north GA Mountains. Amicalola is just a short hour drive from Roswell and is near many fall attractions such as Burt’s Pumpkin Farm, downtown Dahlonega, Ellijay apple country, etc.

Our leader will be Dr. Joe McKechnie, associate minister here at Roswell. Our first session will begin Tuesday evening October 8th and will conclude on Thursday morning October 10th. Wednesday afternoon, will be free to enjoy all the attractions the area, the park, and the lodge have to offer.

We have 40 rooms reserved. Start booking now! Reserve your room for the nights of October 8 and 9th by calling 800 573-9656 and indicating that you are attending the RUMC/CUC retreat. The room rate is $154.10 which includes Lodge Service Fee and state and local taxes.

We will have one common meal together on Wednesday evening. The other meals will be on your own. There is the excellent Maple Restaurant on site and nearby Dahlonega has many fine restaurants. Each person attending will be asked to contribute $75 each to common expenses (common meal, conference room with coffee service, and the speaker’s room and meals). CUC Baseball Outing

A reprise of a popular event from several years ago …

Braves Baseball with Bill on his Birthday!

A small but lucky number of CUCers will be going to see the Braves play the Washington Nationals on Thursday, Sept 5. It’s a night game and the limited numberof tickets are $20 apiece.

The seats are in the 1st and 2nd rows of the top section along the third base line. Tickets are going fast, so act quickly. There are still some available. Questions or reserve tickets? Contact Bill Scott

RUMC Sunday Evening Outreach

Come and help in RUMC’s new bi-monthly ministry outreach to Vickery Rose Adult Community. Vickery Rose is a retirement community located at 295 E. Crossville Road. We have started a Sunday evening service there.

Bonnie White is the pianist and Jeff Ross is the preacher. The service is a “Vespers” type service. Bonnie and Jeff are hoping that the service could be a mission outpost for the church, but also a fun and inspirational service option for RUMC members who would like to experience Sunday Evening worship.

The service is held in the Theater Room at Vickery Rose where the seating is comfortable and the acoustics are outstanding. The next Sunday Service will be on August 18.

Seniors Enriched Living

Seniors Enriched Living (SEL): Tue/Thu, September 17 – November 7 in the Dodson Youth Center. Continuing education classes for ages 50+ available on such topics as history, art, behavioral economics, genealogy, and Music Fun, taught by RUMC’s Worship Arts Ministry. Cost is $60 for as many classes as you want to take! Register: SEL or 770.587.3750.

Georgia Ensemble Theater

A number of CUC’ers have season tickets to Georgia Ensemble. Our tickets are for Series 6 (Thursday nights) and the first show is “Cat on the Hot Tin Roof” Sept 19. Look on line ( https://get.org/ ) or call GET at 770-641-1260 for tickets.

Dick Anthony – Continue to pray as he now deals with Shingles. His chemotherapy was suspended for this week but he hopes to restart next Monday. The chemotherapy has been effective in improving Dick’s situation. Also, continue to pray for Laverne Lamb as she provides care for Dick and manages the many appointments that are necessary throughout each week. They both miss being able to be in CUC on Sunday mornings.

CUC in Story Form

This Sunday Roger Davis will be presenting our lesson. The title of the lesson is: “CUC in Story Form” There are two scripture passages for the morning. The first is: “Jesus always used stories and illustrations like these when speaking to the crowds. In fact, he never spoke to them without using such parables.” Matthew 13:34 The second is: “God has given each of us the ability to do certain things well” Romans 12:6. Be thinking about stories and experiences that you have had as a result of being a member of CUC.

This past Wednesday evening 34 CUC members enjoyed a Southern cooking dinner together at Family Tradition Restaurant, owned by the Schnakenberg’s son.

CUC Wednesday Night Dinner for August 7 at 5:30 will be at: Peach & the Porkchop [MENU], 12040 Etris Rd, Roswell. (This restaurant is owned by MariAnna and Fred Brown’s daughter and son-in -law).

If you don’t sign up on Sunday and can attend or you sign up and can’t attend please notify Larry Douglas by noon Tuesday. Regular RUMC WNOs begin the following week.

CUC Class Officers for 2019-20

Time flies by! August 4th is the date that new Sunday School Class officers and committee members take over some of the tasks of keeping our Christians Under Construction class organized, taught, cared for, prayed for, entertained, and in touch with one another.

Thanks especially to outgoing president Sara Beecham who has led our class and been present to graciously preside over our CUC class every Sunday except one during this past year. A donation in her honor has been given to our CUC Foundation Endowment Fund.

RUMC Sunday Evening Outreach

Come and help Jeff Ross and Bonnie White in RUMC’s new bi-monthly ministry outreach to Vickery Rose Adult Community.

Vickery Rose is a retirement community located at 295 E. Crossville Road. We have started a Sunday evening service there. Bonnie is our pianist and Jeff Ross is the preacher. The service is a “Vespers” type service. The RUMC Coffeehouse

The newly-opened RUMC Coffee House, a collaboration between Kennesaw’s Independent Grounds Cafe and RUMC, has opened on Mimosa Boulevard. The coffee shop primarily employs people in the community living with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The idea of it is to showcase what inclusive employment opportunities look like for local businesses that employ adults with special needs. For many of the employees, this is their first job opportunity. It provides them an opportunity to grow in confidence and develop their skills that they can then take anywhere. All they need is to be given a chance to shine.

The coffeehouse menu consists of a variety of coffee and espresso drinks and grab-and-go pastries. Light lunch fare is planned for the future. The shop offers seating inside and outside on the porch and at tables throughout the grounds. Consider stopping in for a cup of coffee sometime when you happen to be at the church!

Jeff Koelho had major cervical disk surgery last Friday and is now home but faces a long period of convalescence
Sharon and Bob Schnakenberg’s grandson, Owen (13), moved to Scottish Rite Hospital for surgery on his facial tumor
Dr. Mike Long (now Atlanta Emory Area District Superintendent) had emergency surgery Tuesday at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and was to remain in the hospital at least through Thursday. Thank you for your prayers.

MUST Summer Lunches

Some CUC members picked up supplies this past Monday and prepared the Must Ministries foods assembly line in the Dod for the Tuesday CUC Crew. (Then they checked out the new RUMC Coffee Shop and reported that the coffee shop looks nice after remodeling and renovating and the coffee was fine.)

The CUC Tuesday Crew packed 1000 bags. Thanks to Sandy Griffin and her committee and all helpers and financial contributors who put together 3000 lunch bags for the MUST Lunch Program this summer. The MUST Summer Lunch Program will continue to deliver lunches each day through August 9. To sign up to pack and load lunches or to drive and ride on a delivery route, visit rumc.com/MUST.

Our teacher this Sunday is Dave Mueller, a member of the Crosstalk Sunday School Class. He has taught our class before and we look forward to welcoming him back. Dave’s subject is “What is on the final exam?’ The overall scripture passage is Micah 6:6-8.

With the results from the potluck supper love offering of over $1600 plus some additional funds from the CUC treasury, checks in the amount of $1,000 have been given to Homestretch and to the Murphy-Harpst Children’s Home in Cedartown.

CUC Wednesday Night Out

This past Wednesday evening, 36 of us dined at Brookwood Grill.

Reservation has been made for Altobeli’s Italian restaurant [MENU] for 5:30 pm on next Wednesday, July 24. The location is 3000 Old Alabama Rd, Alpharetta (corner of Haynes Bridge Rd & Old Alabama Rd). The owner will again provide free hors d’oeuvres for each table in our group.

If you don’t sign up on Sunday and can attend or you sign up and can’t attend please notify Larry or Ann Douglas by noon Tuesday, so we can provide the restaurant with an accurate count.

Christian, What do You Believe?

We will welcome Scott Dickson back this Sunday after his “thought provoking” lesson last week. The title of the lesson this week is “Christian, What do You Believe?”

Patriotic Picnic Potluck

There was a great turnout for the Patriotic Picnic Wednesday evening, Jeff Coelho counted 83 in attendance.

We also celebrated Charlotte and Malone’s 60 wedding Anniversary, Dee and Bill Scott’s Anniversary and Beverly Tatom’s Birthday.

The United Methodist Conference has established this fully accredited Christian grade school through high school to educate poor children in Appalachia. It has a 97% graduation rate. Prayers for Diana Frei, who is in the last stages of lymphoma. She has stopped treatment except for meds to keep her comfortable. She is being cared for at home by her partner of 40 years, Gail Erman.
Prayers for Rev. Melissa Mobley and her family. Her father Jack Kime, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 25th. Funeral arrangements are as follows: Visitation will be Friday, June 28th from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Calhoun, GA. The funeral service will be Saturday, June 29th at 11:00 am at Calhoun First UMC (205 E Line St., Calhoun, GA).

This facility is run by Dr. Ruiz Arguelles , a top 50 Mayo Clinic Alumnus, and is one of two places in the world with proven results of stopping MS progression. Thank you in advance for your prayers.

We have been asked by Mary Stokes to please share this invitation with our Sunday school class members and friends in the community.

On Tuesday morning, June 25 at 10 a.m. in the dining room we will welcome Molly Boone who is a Certified Dementia Care Practitioner, an alumnus of the University of North Carolina and now serves as the Divisional Dementia Care Manager of the South Coast Division (FL, GA, & SC) for Brookdale.

Molly will join us on Tuesday morning to elaborate on each of the six domains of an optimum life – physical, emotional, purposeful, spiritual, social, and intellectual. The focus will be on what you can do right now to change certain behaviors and make lifestyle changes. The goal is that these changes will promote wellness into your own life and the lives of others. This session is part of our RUMC C3 ministry that is our Proactive Approach to Caring.

Vacation Bible School Help Requests/ Venezuela Crate

Starting on Monday, almost 400 children will be on campus for Vacation Bible School. Snacks for volunteers would be appreciated. They can be dropped off this Sunday June 16th in the Trinity Café.

The VBS children will learn about the children in Venezuela, and they will bring in donations to fill a crate of food and medicine to send! Then, on Friday, June 21st, the 4th and 5th graders will help pack the crate! Please help them bring in donations for the crate! You can bring the donations by Thursday, June 20th, leave them in the Welcome Center or Front Office! Or, you can bring them to CUC class this Sunday.

The items needed are very specific: acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil), infant Tylenol and Advil, children’s and adult’s multi-vitamins, powdered infant formula, canned chicken, dried rice, and dried beans.

We are happy to welcome Mark Goodwin back this Sunday as our speaker. Mark’s subject is “Grief, the Unwelcome Visitor”. Mark will explore healthy ways to respond to the loss of a relationship, a job, our health or a close friend. We all experience loss, but how should we respond?

If you want to come and don’t sign up, or if you sign up and cannot attend, please call Ann or Larry Douglas by noon Tuesday, so we can provide the restaurant with an accurate count.

Patriotic Picnic Potluck

CUC is having a Patriotic Picnic Potluck at the DOD on Wednesday, June 26, at 5:30 pm. Barbecue and tea provided. Entertainment too ! By the “Treble Makers”! (No Charge – there will be a love offering for mission).

We had a large response that signed up this past Sunday. We will pass a signup sheet again this coming Sunday. Those that still need to sign up please bring hors d’oeuvre. We so far have signed up lots of salads, sides, and desserts. Questions? Ask Claudia Phelps.

MUST Summer Lunches

Donations are still being accepted for the summer lunch program. Checks may be placed in the CUC offering basket or given to Charlie Mason.

Members wishing to make donations to the summer lunch program should make out their checks to CUC and include “MUST summer lunches” on the line for notes. These checks can be placed in the collection basket any Sunday. Donations are especially needed as now by law the food must come from a health certified facility and we will not be making them.

We will still be purchasing drinks, chips, cookies, and apples.

On this coming Wednesday, June 12th , CUC will be working in the Dod filling 1,000 bags with those potato chips, juice, cookies and maybe apples.

Volunteer help is also needed other times for volunteers to pack and load lunches or to drive or ride on a delivery route, to get all those lunches delivered each day. Visit rumc.com/must to sign up.

Patriotic Concerts

The Thirty-Eighth Annual Roswell Patriotic Celebration Concerts are Friday, June 28, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 30, at 3 p.m. Complimentary tickets will be available in the Main Office, the Worship Arts office, online at itickets.com or you may get your tickets from Sarah Beecham at CUC class on Sunday morning.

Vacation Bible School Help Requests

CUC member, Nancy Spence, who was RUMC’s Children’s Ministry director for more than 20 years, emphasized the importance of the time spent at Vacation Bible School in the Christian development of our children. RUMC expects more than 380 children will be attending Vacation Bible School this summer. Help is needed. Snacks for volunteers would be appreciated. They can be dropped off on next Sunday June 16th in the Trinity Café.

The VBS mission emphasis will be “Venezuela Now!” You can help fill another crate for Venezuela by bringing in some of the items listed. The items needed are very specific: acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil), infant Tylenol and Advil, children’s and adult’s multi-vitamins, powdered infant formula, canned chicken, dried rice, and dried beans.

Job Networking

At Job Networking, Monday, June 10, dinner is at 5:30 p.m. The dinner speaker will be Debbie Goodwin. CUC has many volunteers at each Job Networking program. Perhaps you would like to join them.

Seniors Enriched Living

Seniors Enriched Living (SEL) will meet for a 6-week session on Thursdays, June 13-July 25 (no class July 4) in the Dodson Youth Center. Continuing education classes are offered in art, economics, health, history, and more. Come learn and connect with this active group! Register at selroswellga.org or call 770.587.3750.

Noah’s Ark

The Annual Noah’s Ark Field Day will be held on Saturday, May 18. This is a great event in the life of our church and we are hopeful that you will find some capacity in which you feel called to serve.

This makes such a difference for so many. The event will be held at Grimes Bridge park in Roswell.

The Hospitality Committee has requested that a greeter be placed at the North door in the B building next to our CUC class before the 11:00 am service starting in May and continuing during the odd months.

Must Summer Lunch Program

MUST Summer Lunch kicks off Tuesday, May 28!

RUMC serves as the North Fulton hub of the MUST Summer Lunch Program, delivering 1,000 lunches each day of the summer, May 28-July 26. Last year, volunteers donated, packed, and delivered over 50,000 sack lunches to children in our community who receive free and reduced lunch during the school year.

Prayers are requested for George Crolius’ cousin Michelle Hamilton, and family, following Michelle’s passing on Mother’s Day in Florida. Michelle had been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer in February. Michelle had been her Mother Silvas primary caregiver for the past several years.

Marianna Brown asks for prayers for her niece – Diana, her Husband Chris and baby Jack. The Doctor had to take Jack at 25 weeks because Diana had preeclampsia. Jack weighs 1lb 3oz and is on a ventilator. Please pray for healing for Diana and strength, the Doctors have given Jack a 60% chance of survival.
Update: Diana was able to go home. baby Jack is still on a ventilator. He will not be able to go home until August. Please continue your prayers for baby Jack and his family.

Update: Beverly talked to LaVerne Lamb – PLease pray for Dick’s liver functions to improve so he may have chemo, and surgery on his right leg. Dick wants to thank CUC for the cards, calls, and especially all the prayers.

Update: Ann McNew received a message from Jim Lappe: Rose is recovering well. There are ups and downs with her pain, but we are pleased with her progress. She appreciates all the cards, visits, flowers, food and thanks you for the many prayers,
Janice Scalzo – pray for good recovery and relief of pain following her recent major knee surgery. She continues to improve.

The woman was convinced. The fruit looked so fresh and delicious, and it would make her so wise! So she ate some of the fruit. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her. Then he ate it, too. At that moment, their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they strung fig leaves together around their hips to cover themselves.

The Garage Sale took in about $36,000 this year.

Other Ministries also benefited from receiving items that were not sold at the Garage Sale. The Organizations – No Longer Bound, Foster Care, and Cheaper by the Dozen received clothing and other items. And Job Networking – Job Seekers also volunteered to help with the Garage Sale. Great Job Everyone!

Update: Roger Davis talked to Dick last Friday, his blood platelets are still not at the level needed to be able to start chemotherapy. He will have his platelets checked again this week (last Monday – May 6th) to see if he can begin chemo.
Laverne Lamb could use some prayers as she has been suffering from a variety of medical problems recently.
Rose Lappe – pray for a fast recovery from her surgery.

Linda is back on the kidney transplant list after being taken off due to collapse in January and has a donor. But, her numbers are so stable that they are postponing surgery until more need arises. She says, “Thank you to all my wonderful prayer warriors. God is so good! Praise his Holy name!”

Must Summer Lunch Program

Sandy Griffin reminded us about the MUST Summer Lunch program coming up. CUC has provided 5400 lunches in the past couple of years.

We have $800 put aside for this purpose and it costs about $1300 each summer. Contributions will be needed.

Marianna Brown asks for prayers for her niece – Diana, her Husband Chris and baby Jack. The Doctor had to take Jack at 25 weeks because Diana had preeclampsia. Jack weighs 1lb 3oz and is on a ventilator. Please pray for healing for Diana and strength, the Doctors have given Jack a 60% chance of survival.
George Crolius – asks for prayers for the daughter of his 1st Cousin Silva. Her daughter Michelle has been diagnosed with terminal Liver cancer and been given approximately 4 more months. Michelle has been Silva’s primary care giver for the past several years.

We are happy to welcome back Bob Fletcher as our teacher this Sunday and next Sunday. Bob’s topic is “Suddenly their eyes were opened.” For the rest of the story read the account told in Luke 24:13-35. Bob’s lesson is very appropriate for this the first Sunday after Easter.
