Our New Worship Arts Pastor
Dr. Michael Cromwell, Associate Pastor for Worship Arts, will be sharing his story and testimony with us this Sunday. Although he has been at RUMC a relatively short time, we have been blessed through Michael’s ministry.
It will be good to get to know him better as we hear his story and testimony in this smaller group setting. His chosen scripture verse for the morning is: John 3:30

Get Ready for the Fun of Small Group Dinners!
Your Fellowship Committee is preparing for our springtime round of small group dinners. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know your CUC classmates at a more intimate gathering. We encourage all, but especially our newest members, to take advantage of dining at a classmate’s home with 6 or 8 other CUCers. Here are the details:
- Sign-ups will be taken until March 24th. A clip board will be passed in class or you can let a committee member know by email that you would like to join in. (Kris Taylor or Mary Serafina ).
- Simply add your name(s) and mark the column “Host” if you would like to hold the dinner in your home.
- The host provides the main course and wine if desired. Each guest will bring a portion of the meal. Easy peasy!
- The committee will start matching up guests and hosts at the end of March. Dinners will be held throughout the spring (April, May, June) as each group selects a date convenient to all.

Afternoon with Anita Renfroe
The Sounds of the Spirit Concert Series and RUMC Women’s Ministry present An Afternoon with Anita Renfroe on Sunday, March 17 at 3 p.m. This Christian comedienne, singer, and author will be sure to entertain with her unique brand of humor. Complimentary childcare is available. Tickets may be purchased in the Main office, Worship Arts office, or online at itickets.com.
The RUMC Lenten devotion, “Perspectives,” is now available throughout the church. This guide includes writing from our laity, staff, and pastors. Please pick up a guide to use as part of your Lenten journey, and take an extra one to share with a friend.

CPR Class
A CPR & AID class for CUC members will be taught on this Sunday, March 3rd, at 12:30 PM, in the A Building in rooms 177 & 178 which are near the elevator. It will be taught by Teresa Dean who is a certified instructor and a member of RUMC.
This is for anyone who wants to be newly certified or recertified. The cost is $15.00 per person. We suggest you bring a snack or light lunch. The class should last approx. 1 1/2 hrs. Questions? Please contact Sharon Erdman.

When Jesus Seems Mean

New TV Monitors
You can’t help but notice that our class room, the Dining Room, has three new TV monitors that enhance our ability to view announcements and other video media.
Previously there was a video projector that was on its last legs and it was hard to view from all angles in the room. Certain members of the class have been advocating for this improvement and now the Church has heard our cry and installed these high definition TV monitors.
Among those who have been advocating from our class are Doug Tatom, Don McNew, George Waite, Jim Boswell and Roger Davis. Thank you all for persevering.
CUC Mardi Gras Party
The CUC Mardi Gras party is scheduled for this Thursday, February 28th at . Planning for Mardi Gras decorations, food, and “entertainment” is coming along well, and we are looking forward to a great evening!! The dinner party will run from 6:30 PM to about 9:30 PM. Murphy Harpst Visit Recap
CUC’s Mission Outreach Committee sincerely thanks all class members for the successful birthday party for four teenagers at Murphy-Harpst Children’s Center on February 16.
We knew about three boys with February birthdays , but one girl had arrived to live there just the day before.
Fifteen of us carpooled to Cedartown, set up the dining hall with balloons; cake and ice cream, and then greeted the Murphy Harpst residents with their staff. Contact with them was friendly, especially during the rousing Bingo games.
Thanks to anyone who provided prizes for Bingo game winners. Cloudy weather outside did not cancel the cheerfulness inside that room. Your financial contribution covered more than expenses for that annual event; we presented a check for $500 from CUC to Pam Kramer, our contact person there. When the party ended, she conducted a brief tour of the campus and told us more about the program there and future plans.
Several Murphy Harpst girls also benefited from local assistance as they attended the “Promapalooza” at Foster Care Foundation last Sunday here in Roswell and were outfitted with gowns, shoes, and other accessories so that they are ready to attend their prom.
RUMC’s 13th Annual Global Impact Celebration
Global Impact Celebration Life on Mission: Serving Side By Side begins next week from Thursday, February 28 through Sunday, March 3. There are so many opportunities to join in and get involved in this annual event. For a complete list of exciting events, please go to www.rumc.com/gic.
This is a four-day, church-wide event packed with opportunities for you to engage in the missional movement of RUMC. Several local ministry partners and global missionaries will be onsite to share the stories of Roswell and our world. There will be opportunities to assemble snack packs for students served by Action Ministries, have a Saturday in the Park, pack a crate to send to Venezuela, and learn about current issues impacting God’s people. This year, we will be taking a deeper look at the ways we can “serve side by side” to engage and encounter Christ.
Help us Pack the Crate!
As part of this year’s Global Impact Celebration, we are going to pack and send another crate to the people of Venezuela through the agency Venezuela Now! The items needed are very specific:
acetaminophen (Tylenol)
- ibuprofen (Advil)
- infant Tylenol and Advil
- children’s and adult’s multi-vitamins
- powdered infant formula
- canned chicken, dried rice, and dried beans.
Please deliver to church by Monday, Feb. 25 to the Welcome Center, Sanctuary building, or the Main Office, Chapel building, and outside the CUC Classroom.

We are fortunate this Sunday to have a very special guest to bring our lesson which will add insight and meaning to our scripture verse above.
Courtney Cox, granddaughter of Linda and Jim Boswell, will share her perspectives gained from a year long experience with Adventures in Mission. During her time with Adventures In Missions, she basically traveled around the world and had opportunities to interact with other cultures and people groups as they presented the gospel and offered hope in very diverse situations. Courtney’s presentation will help us appreciate how young people are making themselves available to go to the ends of the earth, as Jesus commanded.

CUC Ronald McDonald House Support
Nancy Wright reports that she recently took 27 pounds of pop tops collected by CUC members to one of Atlanta’s two Ronald McDonald Houses.
Since 2010 pop tops have provided a total of $133, 000 toward these Ronald McDonald houses which have provided lodging every year for over 2000 families of ill or injured children. It seems like such a little thing to do, to take tops off of can tops, but $133,000 in 8 years is not insignificant!!

Mark Goodwin will be teaching our lesson Sunday. His topic is “Identity Theft”. He will be using multiple scriptures to talk about our identity in Christ and Satan’s attempt to steal our identity.

The Sounds of the Spirit Concert Series
Carole Ford and Friends will be in concert on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 3 p.m. in the Chapel. Carole will be joined by Fred Sawyers, James Casto,

On Oct. 1 Publix is changing how its customers contribute to charities such as Murphy Harpst (which has received $109,995 from Publix so far this year). Your tag will no longer work. The new system will only require you to give your phone number at checkout but you must set up your account with Publix. Information was passed out in class on Sunday. - Jim Boswell’s heart surgery was successfully completed on Monday. He is now in a regular room. He even has a dedicated person that stays with him which is a part of the hospital program. The family was very pleased with the surgeon. Family members have been coming and going so Linda feels well taken care of. Jim will probably be in the hospital another 5-7 days then remain in Cleveland for observation for another week. They appreciate the cards they have received. The address for them is: InterContinental Suites Hotel, 8800 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44106. Prayers have been effective – Keep them up!
- Pat (Mrs.) Cooney as she has chemo for multiple myeloma. Keep her and her husband Pat in your prayers.
- Virginia Hardy had a bad fall in the RUMC Columbarium. Pray for a quick recovery from her injuries.
- Jackie Hubbard – had her 3rd right knee replacement on last Wednesday, September 26th. Please pray for this to be successful.
- Marlene MacLeod has been suffering with a severe case of shingles since August 24. The shingles are subsiding now, but the pain remains constant. Pray for relief of pain.
- Janet Skalzo is having knee replacement surgery on Tuesday, October 4
- Janet Thomas’ daughter in law was diagnosed with Wegener‘s in August. It attacked her lungs and kidneys and spent some time in ICU. She is on dialysis and chemo. It’s very scary for the whole family because they don’t know what is going to happen. She might have to get a kidney transplant if the chemo or dialysis doesn’t work. Please pray for all who are suffering with these diseases.

- Linda & Jim Boswell as Jim has open heart surgery to replace his tricuspid valve at Cleveland Clinic on Monday, September 24. . He will be in the hospital for about 10 days after surgery, and they will remain in Cleveland for a few more. They are tentatively scheduled to come home on October 6.
Linda says they feel very blessed to have this opportunity, to know they have your thoughts and prayers.
Latest news from Linda: Jim, Lisa, and I arrived in Cleveland last night (Wednesday Night). Lots of tests all day. In spare time, Jim got 6000 flood buckets and lids donated and delivery arranged. Will have more tests tomorrow, and enter the hospital on Saturday. All is well. Thanks For thoughts and prayers. - Pat (Mrs.) Cooney as she has chemo for multiple myeloma. - Johnie Wright’s mother, Wilma Diemer, fell Wednesday on her front porch and was having full hip replacement surgery Thursday afternoon in Cookeville, Tn. She is 89 years old.
- Received today from Sandy Martin: I received an urgent email just now from our daughter, Jennie. She has friends who have a 9 year old son, Clinton Goode, who had a serious bike accident Tuesday.
He is in ICU at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta with extensive internal injuries to organs including his pancreas. They are attempting a stent to the pancreas tomorrow.
Clinton needs a miracle and I KNOW they happen. I am asking all you prayer warriors and anyone you may know to pray for this child. If you are in a prayer group, could you please add his name?

This twice-a-year activity is a delightful way to get to know your classmates The Fellowship Committee assigns 6 – 8 guests to “host homes.” The host then organizes the group by finding a convenient date and preparing the main course. Guests bring the side dishes. Easy peasy and lots of fun!

- Linda & Jim Boswell as they prepare for their trip to Cleveland for Jim’s open heart surgery to replace his tricuspid valve at Cleveland Clinic on September 24. They will go up on Wednesday, September 19. He will have tests for two days, and enter the hospital on Saturday, September 22. He will be in the hospital for about 10 days after surgery, and they will remain in Cleveland for a few more. They are tentatively scheduled to come home on October 6. Linda says they feel very blessed to have this opportunity, to know they have your thoughts and prayers, and to have their family traveling with them
- Pat (Mrs.) Cooney as she has chemo for multiple myeloma. Keep her and her husband Pat in your prayers.

Calling All Seniors (age 60+)
Do you like to sing? For the Prime Time Singers, RUMC’s Senior Adult Choir under the direction of Tom Alterman, no experience or audition is necessary.
PTS rehearses on Wednesday mornings in the choir room beginning September 5 through May from 10:45 -12 noon for a fun-filled time of rehearsal and fellowship. The choir sings for the First Sunday Communion Services, Senior Adult Activities, and at venues in the community.
Homestretch Volunteers
CUC has been a big supporter of Homestretch since its very beginning. Our own Malone Dodson was an original founder of Homestretch 25 years ago when he saw the need in our community for housing for families who were homeless.
Currently CUC still has a number of active volunteers with Homestretch. Hugh and Sue Gardner work regularly in the office. Sandy Martin serves at the reception desk each Monday. Lynn Adcock serves on the Homestretch Board. Tom Knight and George Waite regularly serve on committees for fund-raising events. Ask any of these people if they know of how you might be of service in this organization

Homestretch Year End Report
As CUC has always been a big supporter of Homestretch since its very beginning it is with pleasure that we hear the statistics June to June of this year:
Of 15 families, 14 graduated. All are full-time employed and in permanent housing. Two of their kids are off to college, one an honor graduate with a full scholarship to Stanford University.
Why Could Red Bird Christian School Use 2nd Language Textbooks?
Recently Norma and David Hills took clothing, books etc. to Red Bird Missions including 2nd language textbooks.
UM Churches and volunteers with their money, labor, and materials renovated Red Bird’s two old dorms so a Residential Program could be offered. The 2 dorms house 24 students and each dorm has its own dorm parents.
Internationals attending the Residential Programs live in these dorms and concentrate on the skills of learning a new language: grammar, reading writing, vocabulary, listening and speaking. Their goals are to attend a college or university. That’s how the 2nd language textbooks are used.
To facilitate their spiritual growth, they participate in daily devotions, weekly chapel services, Sat. leadership training and 2 Bible Study courses during their high school career.

His Topic is “How Not To Read the Bible”
Retired Methodist Pastor, Rev. Dr. James McCormick is the author of five books including: Welcome Home, Tell It Like It Can Be, Marriage Is For Adults, Does It Look and Sound Like Jesus? and The Gospel Goes to Broadway. He is a contributor to the Upper Room Disciplines and 1992 Abingdon Preaching Annual and 1993 Abingdon Preaching Annual. McCormick formerly served as an Adjunct Professor at the School of Theology at Claremont and Fuller Theological Seminary.
Jim is one of our CUC all time favorite teachers. We look forward to his teaching us again this Sunday.

RUMC NAME BADGES
While we all have “CUC Name Tags”, the church is encouraging us to get the RUMC name badges and wear them when we are on the campus.
Patty Hampton, who works for Nancy Lane, is responsible for ordering the badges and will be placing an order soon.
We will pass a sign up sheet this Sunday for those who don’t already have a badge and want one. They sure help when you recognize someone but can’t remember their name. They also help in talking to those you don’t know.

Here are some RED BIRD CHRISTIAN SCHOOL FACTS:
- The first year (1922) two teachers had 2 senior high and 95 elementary students. This year there are 78 in elementary and preschool, 27 in middle school, and 89 in high school.
- In 1988 Red Bird Christian School separated from the public system to focus on spiritual development of students and faculty by emphasizing Christianity and the Bible.
- Their motto is “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve.”
- The school was why Red Bird Mission began.

- Pastor Andrew Brunson is still on house arrest in Turkey while the U.S. imposes sanctions on Turkey, demanding his release. Please pray for his release soon, or at the scheduled hearing October 12. Terry and Wanda Taylor’s son Kent is Andrew’s partner in ministry.
- Pray for Mary Serafina and her daughter Pam Pruit as Pam continues chemo.
Please pray for needs expressed and unexpressed for friends and relatives of CUC class members who are facing illnesses, loss of loved ones, and important decisions to be made.
